Bug Description

Package: zram-config (0.6)
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 21.10
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.13.0-1008.9-raspi 5.13.14
Uname: Linux 5.13.0-1008-raspi aarch64

---

I already had zram-config installed on ubuntu 21.04.
After upgrading to ubuntu 21.10 the systemd service only gives the message "FAILURE".
I have already tried to reinstall zram-config but no change.

(I would also like to provide more infos/logs, but I am not sure what is correct.)

Hi, I have updated zram-config package using multi-stream rather than separated devices, it should avoid breaking on CPU with many cores (I don't think this is your case) as well as improve performance.

If you want to give it a try it's here: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/test/+packages

Hello, thank you very much for your answer.

Unfortunately, the new version also does not enable zram. At the moment there are several kernel problems (rpi on 21.10). Maybe I should wait until the 8th of november.

I have downgraded to the last ubuntu 21.04 kernel (5.11.0-1021-raspi) and zram-config is now working.

Apparently the zram module (among others) is no longer there by default on 21.10. It can be installed through the linux-modules-extra-raspi

From the release notes:
Various kernel modules have been moved from the linux-modules-raspi package in order to reduce the initramfs size. This results in several applications (most notably Docker, bug 1947601 18) failing due to missing kernel modules. To work around this:
sudo apt install linux-modules-extra-raspi

Hopefully this helps.

The zram module is needed. With installed "linux-modules-extra-raspi" it's working fine.

This also worked for me. I placed an automatic apt install as part of my github repository for the systemd-zram script for installation. It took me a long time to find this solution. I hope that any other repositories that install zram will take heed of this.

I have found that this makes Ubuntu practical for running on a Raspberry Pi 4 with 8 GB or RAM. It prevents hanging when running a large number of processes or having many open tabs in a browser. I now have 2 of my 3 PI4s with 8GB running Ubuntu 21.10. For inexplicable reasons (firmware) the first PI 4 with 8GB will run Ubuntu 20.10, but will not successfully upgrade or boot after a fresh install of the 21.04 or 21.10 OS. Any suggestions welcome (Yes, I need to post this as a separate question).
