This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. While running an Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline or third-party kernel) please enter the following command in a terminal window:

apport-collect 1946507

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

Possibly the same as the one I filed (LP: #1946828)

@Men K - is this a 100% of the time issue for you, or does this possibly go away upon reboot?

I also get this error with Ubuntu Budgie 21.10, may try going to 21.04 and see if it changes. I think this is occurring due to the "ntfsresize tainted" error in the log - I do have Windows on half the partition and had used "MiniTool Partition Wizard to clear half the drive first. Might be a path to replicating the error.

Step 1) Install Windows on half the drive.
Step 2) Install Windows on the other half
Step 3) Use MiniTool Partition Wizard and clear half the drive.
Step 4) Attempt to install Ubuntu - If you get past the "Updates and other software" screen then go the recommended route and then click the go back button instead of confirming that you want to go forward.
Step 5) Watch as every subsequent install fails.

More details on step 3 - to be specific I deleted the 1st Windows install on the partition and then moved the 2nd down to the 1st and left half the drive unallocated on the latter end.

Confirmed - this bug impacts the 21.10 installer of Ubuntu Budgie and appears like it is an upstream issue as well given I found this. This bug does not impact 20.04 installers. (could not find 21.04 installer, so not tested)

Also I know initially I did not have this issue before I repartitioned with Minitool - I felt it was safer to repartition and move things around how I wanted from that tool first before proceeding and then the installer broke after after that. I ran diskcheck repairs from Windows and never found an issue either, so no idea what happened - but I am guessing some code change causes it to get hung up on something NTFS related when it shouldn't be.

Similar hang on a T440s trying to install Ubuntu 21.10. The system currently has a fresh Windows 11 copy on half of its SSD hard drive. It seems that ntfsresize causes the kernel to hang. Trying to install Ubuntu gets stuck in Step 4. Install logs attached.

Hardware wise, the system seems to work fine.

It seems that Ubuntu 20.04.4 gets stuck at the same step with the same traces appearing in the kernel log. Since the installer uses the same kernel (5.13) it likely is caused by that kernel version. Ubuntu 22.04 (nightly as of 20220301, which seems to come with 5.15) seems to work fine here.

I tried installing on a machine and had this error also. Tried to supply logs per the above command but it didn't let me since I didn't report this issue. Before I try to reboot, I'm capturing the error from syslog
