Bug Description

After upgrading to Ubuntu 21.10 and Thunderbird 1:78.13.0+build1-0ubuntu2, creating, updating, or deleting events in Google Calendar often produces a MODIFICATION_FAILED error, but succeeds anyway. The events are shown in the Google Calendar web interface, and exiting and restarting Thunderbird shows them locally.

This problem seems to only happen if Thunderbird has been running for a while (overnight, for example). It never seems to happen immediately after restarting Thunderbird. Perhaps Thunderbird's connection to Google is getting stuck after a while? I am using hotel internet access, which is not always the most reliable or consistent, and I have noticed this problem on two different hotel networks in the last few days.

This problem did not happen on Ubuntu 21.04 and whatever version of Thunderbird it uses.

There are a number of upstream bug reports mentioning MODIFICATION_FAILED (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=MODIFICATION_FAILED), but at a quick glance nothing that matches the problem you're describing, so I'd suggest filing an upstream bug, and sharing the link to it here.

Also, there are many calendar-related fixes in the new stable series (91), so it could very well be that the problem is fixed there. As of 5 hours ago, Ubuntu 21.10 has thunderbird 1:91.1.1+build2-0ubuntu1, so you should be able to update and test that new version (feedback welcome in the form of bug reports, by the way!).

Thank you Olivier. Once my mirror has Thunderbird 91, I'll give it a try.

So far this seems to be working correctly on Thunderbird 91.
