On a default install of ubuntu hardy alpha4, plugging in a cannon scanner will not work unless xsane or the gimp is ran as sudo, because the default USB permissions dont allow the default user to access.

Same here on Ubuntu Beta, amd64 with all updates applied until today. My scanner is a LiDE 20, "ID 04a9:220d Canon, Inc. CanoScan N670U/N676U/LiDE 20".

But maybe I should add, that I did not do a new install of the beta, but upgraded from previous alpha.
