Steps to reproduce:
1) Execute pinta
2) Select text tool
3) Observe cursor does not turn to text-caret until after a few seconds.
4) Click somewhere on the empty image.
5) Observe nothing seems to happen.
6) Type a few characters.
7) Observe that unexpected characters appear (see debuginfo/*.png) where you typed
8) Observe that the font name combobox changes to a string of unexpected characters
9) Observe that you cannot change the combobox selection (there's only one entry).

Could you please try the GTK3 build of Pinta (https:/ /github. com/PintaProjec t/Pinta/ releases/ tag/dev- preview- builds) and see if the issue still appears?
There have been several fixes related to the text tool in that branch
