I am seeing error messages in the log that may have to do with the problem:

The main issue appears to be:

> Failed to post KMS update: drmModePageFlip on CRTC 33 failed: Nicht genügend Hauptspeicher verfügbar

The messages before that are expected and not errors.

To avoid this problem you should be able to select 'Ubuntu' on the login screen, since it sounds like the problem is unique to the 'Ubuntu on Wayland' option.

Using "ubuntu" at log-in did not solve it.
A full power-cycle of the server did now resolve it. Before I did only reboots. Looks like the BMC/Aspeed required a full power off to reset properly.
Ticket can be closed, please.

Oh, are you saying both Wayland and Xorg logins work now?

Xorg worked after a full power cycle again.
Wayland is still showing the issue and generating the error message of

gnome-shell 1856945 - - Failed to post KMS update: drmModePageFlip on CRTC 33 failed: Nicht genügend Hauptspeicher verfügbar

Let me know if you need me to do any further diagnostics.

OK, that's what I expected. I suggest that error in Wayland sessions should be reported as a bug to upstream:
