Bug Description

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using?

Xubuntu 20.04.2 LTS.

2) The version of the package you are using?

Catfish File Search 1.4.13

3) What you expected to happen?

Catfish is suppose to find the filenames that you are looking for based off the search terms that you provide.

4) What happened instead?

Catfish becomes unresponsive after entering search terms, but sometimes it works and the files are found, but most of the time it becomes unresponsive.

I went to Synaptic Package Manager and reinstalled Catfish, it didn't help, I still becomes unresponsive.

There was a bug in 1.4.13 where Catfish would freeze if encountering a pipe file. It would appear to keep searching but never return results beyond that file and had to be forced closed. I believe that that only happened in "Search file contents" mode.

Would you be able to run this in a terminal (~ can be replaced with any directory):

find ~ -type p 2>/dev/null

or for the whole system:

find / -type p 2>/dev/null

And see if anything comes up. Especially in the directories you might be having trouble with. If so try searching with Catfish in the directory that the pipe file is in and see if the unresponsiveness seems to be the same as what you're having problems with.

Another problem Catfish had was looping Wine symlinks. Have you used any sort of Wine (Wine itself, Play on Linux, Lutris, Steam/Proton, etc?)

You can also try launching Catfish from the terminal and see if it gives any errors when searching.

You can also try using a newer version of Catfish and see if you still have problems:

https://gitlab.xfce.org/apps/catfish

Newest deb package (but does not work with Wayland, the two above should):
https://packages.ubuntu.com/hirsute/catfish

If you're still having problems what would help to know is: Are you having problems with the same search keywords? What options do you have selected (match exact, search contents, etc)? Are you searching only local directories? Any external drives?
