I'm confirming this issue with Hardy 64-bit final and firefox 3.0b5:

Here's the firefox-2 error:

$ firefox-2
firefox-2-bin: /build/buildd/cairo-1.6.0/src/cairo-ft-font.c:587: _cairo_ft_unscaled_font_unlock_face: Assertion `unscaled->lock_count > 0' failed.
Aborted

Here's as much of the firefox 3 error that will print before it lock up entirely and has to be killed:

$ firefox

I too can confirm this problem.

Whether running normally or in safe mode with all addons disabled results in a segmentation fault. The browser crashes if I select a menu item from the browser's File, Edit menu or attempt to launch an mp3 stream. With the latter the crash occurs when the Play/Save As dialog's OK button is clicked (has happened on both shoutcast.org and abc.net.au/triplej sites).

Additionally, the Quick Search in the top right of the browser doesn't work either; both hitting enter and clicking the start search button doesn't work.

There are no other errors, either in stdout or in any error logs.

I'm using Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 with Mozilla Firefox v3.0b5

I have a similar issue - though I only get a single message "Segmentation fault".

Has this got any similarity or anything to do with http://ge.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?t=556321 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=757070?

I'm on Hardy Heron and Firefox 3 Beta 5.

It did crash eventually but not as quickly as usual. See attachment. It took a very long time for GDB to load and then product the backtraces, is that normal? Or is it just because I don't have much RAM?

Problem solved for me by uninstalling pango-graphite in synaptic.

Why is this Bug incomplete and importance is undecided?
I switched all ubuntu installations to 8.04 an now ~ every 5 minutes the users see a browser crash!
We see this:
- without flash
- with firefox 3
- with firefox 2
- without any extensions (mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.old; firefox-2)
- while browsing bugs.launchpad.net

(i have to write this report using epiphany-browser)

So what do you need to complete this bug report?

Maybe this is due to some non-default font in use?

Yes this could be.

After
apt-get remove pango-graphite
I see no more crashes

apt-cache show pango-graphite
Section: universe/libs
Maintainer: Ubuntu MOTU Developers <email address hidden>

I do have installed:
ttf-arphic-gbsn00lp
ttf-baekmuk
ttf-gujarati-fonts
ttf-tamil-fonts
ttf-telugu-fonts

Maybe configure firefox not to use pango?

Kind Regards

I can also confirm that the problem (in my case, almost immediate crashing/freezing on launch) is solved after uninstalling pango-graphite.

Running Ubuntu Hardy, "2.6.24-19-rt #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Wed Aug 20 20:13:12 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux".
