Bug Description
Binary package hint: firefox-3.0
Yesterday I upgraded my hardy to the current one, and also firefox 3 got through.
Now the following features doesn't work (they worked before):
- session restore: regardless of my Startup settings in Preferences, Firefox never restores any tabs.
- undo close tab: this option/menu entry is completely missing

1. Please backup your $HOME/.mozilla directory first (IMPORTANT) and keep it until this bug is closed :)
2. please try to select a different entry once; restart firefox; select your initial setting again; restart firefox and see if it works.
Thanks,
- Alexander

Finally I managed to track the bug down:
If I removed the following line from prefs.js, both session restore and undo close tab began to work.
user_pref(
This line was inserted earlier (when running Firefox version < 3) from the Tab Mix Plus add-on, because it had the mentioned functionality, but avoided a conflict with the bulit-in this way.
Due to unavailability of a compatible version of this plugin with version 3.0b3, it was disabled, so neither Firefox nor the add-on were doing session restore, which is also in charge for "undo close tab".

This is not a bug in Firefox itself, but can be considered as a design flaw:
Disabled or uninstalled plugins should not have any side affects,
or they should be given the possibility to rollback all their modifications, before disabling any of them.

I can confirm that Firefox 3 beta 5 never saves my tabs upon close. I tried every possible setting that even remotely sounds like it would affect this and started over with fresh profiles about a dozen times.

First close Firefox completely. Then try to (re)move the .mozilla directory from your home (~) dir.
Tab restore should work by now.
Although all your settings/
In my example a legacy setting of tabmixplus plugin blocked the tab restoring feature from working.

DONT spread this kind of destructive advice. It _wipe_ all bookmarks
and other data the user might want to keep.
So, if you read this, DONT FOLLOW Gabor's advice!
Try to disable your extensions in the Tools -> Addons dialog. Once you
found the bad extensions, uninstall it there.

I can confirm this bug on a fresh Hardy install, no tab-mix plus whatsoever.
The odd thing is, I can use File > Quit or Ctrl+Q and when I restart firefox, it opens my previous session. However, using the window manager's close button (X) or Alt+F4 (my primary method of closing windows), it does not restore the session and I get the aforementioned error message in the error console.

anyone can confirm that file -> Quit works, but Alt+F4 not? for me
both options work.

Works as expected in hardy RC1 and intrepid RC1+2. Do you have compiz
being used? Are you able to reproduce this outside of compiz? This
sounds like Firefox works fine is file>quit works and the X doesnt work
on the window boarder and that is controlled by compiz when in use.
Please follow the following steps to see if you can reproduce:
1. go to System>
2. Restart X
3. Log in make sure compiz is still turned off and see if you can
reproduce this.
4. once test is done you can turn it back on than.
Please let us know what happens

Also please make sure your Firefox without compiz is using default theme.

Thanks for the replies. I have disabled compiz, changed my appearance preferences to the default Ubuntu (Human) theme, rebooted, then opened firefox. It opened one blank tab. I did a dummy google search in a few different tabs, used the X to close firefox, re-opened it, still won't restore my session. I did a few more dummy google searches in tabs, used Ctrl+Q, re-opened firefox again, and it restored the session. So it seems to be independent of compiz.

Hello again,
Another interesting update on this: I was trying to import my old bookmarks.html file into firefox, as I was previously unaware that firefox 3 uses the sqlite files and was merely backing up my bookmarks file when creating new profiles.
I used the bookmark import utility, imported from that file, closed out of the Organize Bookmarks window (either Alt-F4 or the X button) and I would have them in my bookmark menu.... until the next time I restarted firefox. I manually imported them for a few times before it dawned on me to try using the Quit menu option to close out of the Organize Bookmarks window.
Lo and behold, bookmarks have been there ever since. Not sure if it's gnome, comiz, or what, but something about closing firefox (and its dialogs) without the native Quit option is definitely killing things, at least on my system.
I've reverted to using a basic session manager extension for now, until this gets pegged. Let me know if I can be of any assistance!

so what extension caused this issue for you?

Doesn't seem to be an extension problem. I wiped ~/.mozilla/firefox and started fresh when I first started working on this and it was still happening with a default firefox directory. So it definitely doesn't seem to have anything to do with extensions, unless I'm missing something. Seems to be more of a gnome problem. The X button doesn't send firefox the proper "do this stuff then cleanly exit" that firefox is looking for in order to start session-saver normally on next load. Because the built-in quit works, X button does not. Same behavior for me whether I've got compiz enabled or disabled, old firefox directory or fresh firefox directory, extensions or no extensions.

I can confirm this "design flaw" survived both an upgrade to Hardy and to FF 3.0. In my case it was a removed tab mix plus extension responsible for this and changing browser.

In case anyone stumbles across this, as I just did, it seems to be a bug with FF3 and Tab Mix Plus which persists even if you uninstall the extension. I fixed it by:
(1) Uninstalling TMP,
(2) Closing firefox,
(3) Editing .mozilla/
(4) Restarting firefox.
Why those prefs should continue having an affect after the extension is uninstalled, I don't know, but it seemed to work. Note that you must close FF before making the edit, or it will overwrite all your changes on close. (I can't see a way to remove entries entirely in about:config.)
which startup settings did you tweak in preferences?
