Bug Description

Ubuntu 21.04 devel with kernel 5.11.0-13-generic up to date @ 3/4/2021

Login from gdm till desktop is loaded gives stuttering mousepointer and dock (for 7 seconds)
loading until the desktop icons are visible, then the stuttering goes away and the desktop
works stable after

comparing this on xorg, things get much smoother loading into desktop

Sounds kind of like https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/3571 although the root cause of that one does not exist in GNOME 3.38. And in the end it was closed because the new design of GNOME 40 makes the issue hardly noticeable. So this is probably a "Won't Fix" bug, but we can leave it open for other people to find.

If you disable all the extensions in the 'Extensions' app and then log in again, does the problem still happen?

@Daniel #3 installed ubuntu-tweaks and disabled all extension that were active on a clean install
but login onto desktop with wayland keeps stuttering/lagging

side note, this is an older netbook with a spinner HD, but comparing to xorg its a huge
difference where things load smooth into desktop

The Tweaks app doesn't work with extensions anymore. Please disable the extensions using the app called 'Extensions', then log out and log in again and tell us if the problem is fixed. If it's not fixed by that then please attach a screenshot of the resulting desktop by pressing PrtScn.

Daniel,
The Extensions app isn't installed by default but is pulled in when installing Gnome Tweak Tool.
What lotuspsychje means is that he installed Gnome Tweaks to get the Extensions app.

This bug is about 21.04 which should have the Extensions app installed by default. If it's not then you need to:

  sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-prefs
