Bug Description

Binary package hint: yelp

"Help and Support" closes immediately after displaying a blank window. When yelp is started from a terminal command line, it also closes with error, "Segmentation fault (core dumped)". Yelp does not crash when selecting System > "About Ubuntu," but selecting the Home icon to display the system documentation menu also reliably crashes yelp. I.e., yelp only displays Ubuntu distribution information without crashing.

Reproducible 100%, Ubuntu 7.10, updates fully current.

gdb or valgrind cannot get any information, but have created strace-yelp.log and xsession-error.txt

If anyone thought that this might be a concern, yes, I DID disable both NoScript and Adblock Plus in Firefox, with the same results, yelp appears to search for help files and crashes. Initially the blank window may stay up for about 15 seconds before closing. After that it opens only momentarily, then closes.

In another yelp bug, the yelp (Firefox) browser remains open but is unable to find some contents, or links do not work. I reinstalled ubuntu-docs and gnome-doc-utils on the speculation that the document structure was damaged, but this didn't help. If anyone has any suggestions, I would like to try them. But I am in the midst of moving residence, and there will probably be a few days' delay.

I tried to install yelp_2.21.90-0ubuntu2_i386.deb in Gutsy but received, "Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libc6". May be intended only for Hardy. Got to get back packing now.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
