Bug Description

Had no problem with stylus. Since one of the last updates the stylus freezes the notebook. No reaction to nothing. Only power off by holding hardware button works. Is also mentionned in https://askubuntu.com/questions/1324000/thinkpad-yoga-x1-gen-2-freezes-completely-when-stylus-is-used-ubuntu-20-04-2

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1920682/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

just tried to use an external Wacom tablet(Bamboo): Works with no problems. Only the built in stylus lets the x1 Yoga freeze.
I'm using a Wacom one on another machine. Same kernel (Ubuntu 5.8.0-45.51~20.04.1-generic 5.8.18). No problem there. Installed software very similar.
It seems to only freeze my x1 Yoga

Stylus-problem occurs with kernel 5.8.0-45.51~20.04-generic 5.8.18.
After booting into kernel 5.8.0-44.50~20.04-generic 5.8.18 there is NO PROBLEM. kernel 5.8.0-44.50~20.04-generic 5.8.18

Same issue on a Yoga L380. Kernels 5.8.0-45 and 5.8.0-48 cause a total freeze as soon as the stylus approaches the screen, but booting into kernel 5.8.0-44 leads to the stylus working fine.

I confirm also the issue on my ThinkPad X1 Yoga 3rd gen

Worked like charm before last update. Current kernel is 5.8.0-45 generic. Freeze as soon as the sytlus approaches the screen. I tried to remove all wacom package without success (however, reading the previous post, bug seems to be on a kernel level).
No crash when using the screen with finger (touchscreen), only when using the built-in stylus.

As already mentioned before, booting on kernel 5.8.0-44 fixed the issue also on my system. I tried also with the 5.8.0-45 kernel to remove xserver-xorg-input-wacom package but still crash. There was no way to remove libwacom2 alone to test if it's the fallacious package, because it remove also in the same time the gnome shell. I tried to reinstall the package, without success.
An user on AskUbuntu (https://askubuntu.com/a/1324101/558294) suggest that the bug was fixed on an updated version of the kernel but without detail.

Problem is also reported on #1920573 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libwacom/+bug/1920573

Kernel 5.11 seems to fix the issue but seems to be globally unstable.

I confirm this bug on Thinkpad Yoga X11 gen.3 Laptop freezes completely and it cannot even be rebooted. The only solution was to let it drain the battery before charging to reboot. This is a very ugly bug.

@RazTaz : you can force shutdown of the Thinkpad Yoga X11 by pressing the power button during more than 5 seconds. By the way, there is a fix of this bug (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-hwe-5.8/+bug/1920632) with a patch on the kernel (5.8.45) that can be installed via proposed channel (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed).
