Bug Description

Xorg upstream has forked xwayland from xorg-server master with it's own versioning, in order to get new functionality to the users now that new major xserver releases have pretty much been abandoned.

This bug is to allow this separate source enter the archive past FF. It replaces the xwayland binary from src:xorg-server.

The version is now at 21.0.99.902, meaning rc2 of 21.1. The final release is expected later this month. It would be useful to have the latest release in hirsute now that a wayland session is used by default.

The package is available in ppa:canonical-x/x-staging

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1918455/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I think we should do this.

Do you have an upload of xorg-server prepared which drops xwayland?

not yet but it's trivial, the new xwayland replaces it nicely on upgrade even if xorg-server still builds it (as is the case when adding the ppa)

It needs to be dropped from xorg-server at the same time otherwise future updates, e.g. if there's a security update or a transition, won't be able to be uploaded properly.
