Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

After todays update (up-to-date hardy amd64 16/02/2008) Evince stopped opening *.cbr and *.cbz files displaying a message about rar and zip files not supported.
cbr and cbz are a very simple ebook format, commonly used for comic books, that consist only a set of images compressed using rar (cbr) or zip (cbz).
It used to work fine before this update.

There you go.
It is pretty much a zip or rar file only with images on it.
These work fine on comix and old evince (gutsy livecd).

I can confirm it happens here, with the files Mahdi attached and any other cbr files I downloaded, too. Even the ones that previously worked.

This bug is still/again present with latest evince-gtk package for Ubuntu. Running Xubuntu Intrepid Ibex, fully updated.

Please don't file bugs against the 'evince-gtk' source package, use 'evince' instead (on intrepid, the 'evince' source package provides both evince and evince-gtk binary packages). Thanks.

Aaaand on actually studying the problem in depth I found the cause. The problem is not in the package, it's in my Ubuntu install. False alarm, as far as this bug is concerned.

I am using evince 2.25.2 on jaunty, and it opens cbr files alright but NOT cbz files.

As far as I'm concerned it is not fixed. I switched all my drives over to ext 4 a week ago and the only problem that resulted was that some files (not all, only .cbr or .cbz files where the file icon--normally a thumbnail of the front page-- is not showing in nautilus) do not open in evince or in comix (.cbr/.cbz viewer). This did not happen after the install, which occurred in April, so there is some other problem i think. I get the "unable to unrar" error.

Using Jaunty 9.04 up to date.

Well, it stopped working for me a few days ago, running up to date karmic.
I tried downgrading and running from the squashfs of the install media and still get the same error, so I think it was one of the dependencies that was broken.
I tried installing cbrpager and I get the following error on the console, could this be related?

Requesting page 1/116 ( Pages/CVG01400001.jpg)
caution: filename not matched: Pages/CVG01400001.jpg
Can't load the page (/tmp/cbrl8viBO)

(cbrpager:20225): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

On my 64 bit Ubuntu 9.04, when I try to open a .cbz with evince 2.26.1, I get the following error:

Unable to open document
File type Zip archive (application/zip) is not supported

I can extract it and use Eye of Gnome, .cbr files work fine.
