Bug Description
Hi all,
several users try to use 'hp-setup' for scanners-only devices, but hp-setup is a tool for installing printers or multifunction devices, because it always tries to find a PPD for the device.
I understand the intention to install plugin during the hp-setup based on data in models.dat, but it would need to add proper handling of standalone scanners (like not going to PPD search, not show them as 'printers' in toolbox etc.) in hp-setup and update all help messages in hp-setup, which IMHO brings more work than resulted pros are worth.
HPAIO scanner backend already does reading the data from models.dat and binary plugins for scanning (if necessary) can be installed by hp-plugin, so scanning doesn't need a standalone installer or updating hp-setup for it.
Instead of it I came up with a patch (attached) which will explain the situation to users how to proceed with scanners. It checks if scanjet is in model name for now - iirc that's a name HP uses for standalone scanners, if matches, it shows a message telling them scanning work out of the box after hplip installation and if not, then recommends using hp-plugin.
What do you think of it?
Would you mind merging it to the project?
Thank you in advance,
Zdenek
