So, after trying multiple versions of Ubuntu (usb installer), all of them failed to boot.
Also lubuntu.
I was able to fix it using this comment here: https:/
In particular, just doing this:
"I found that the 256gb nvme Asus used was a wd black series and it has issues on Linux. Try using this on your kernel boot line:
nvme_core.
I added this to grub and it works perfectly now.
This is on an ASUS fx505dy with a Western Digital 256gb nvme black series, and I've seen other users with the same hard drive report similar problems, but different laptops so I think it the HD.
