Bug Description

This package provides some extra xdg menus (currently "Electronics" and "Ham radio"), which may be required or desired by users of certain applications, such as Electronics programs.

The new gEDA 1.4.0 suite, hopefully being sync'd soon, really benefits from this, as do the recently Sync'd pcb-20080202 and gerbv-2.0.1 packages.

Extra menu categories for applications under GNOME and KDE

This package installs various optional extra desktop menus for grouping applications on GNOME, KDE and other XDG menu-spec compliant desktop environments. The extra menus may be enabled or disbled on a system or per-user basis with the supplied scripts, exmenen and exmendis.

extra-xdg-menus (1.0-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Conflict/replace hamradiomenus << 1.1. The newer version is a dummy
package which will transition to this package.

extra-xdg-menus (1.0-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Initial release.

Its probably worth noting that this is a new package, not yet in Ubuntu. (I forgot to note that before).

Gah, more bugspam, sorry...

When syncing this, it is also useful / important to sync the latest hamradiomenus from Debian, which has become a dummy-package to transition towards extra-xdg-menus.

hamradiomenus (1.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * The package extra-xdg-menus now includes hamradiomenu's functionality and
more, so make this a dummy package which depends on that package.

Sync request ACKed for extra-xdg-menus.

hamradiomenus will probably have to wait until extra-xdg-menus passes NEW, to avoid breaking existing installations due to removal of functionality. (extra-xdg-menus is only in Depends for the new hamradiomenus, not in Build-Depends.)

I'm marking the hamradiomenus component as "New" again now, since extra-xdg-meus is now available.

Thanks!

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/extra-xdg-menus is available too. What is missing? Can you elaborate?

Peter Clifton (pcjc2) wrote :

As far as I can see, nothing is missing, but the newer (dummy) version of hamradiomenus

extra-xdg-menus also provides the same "Ham radio" menu as hamradiomenus, so this was added in its control file:

Conflicts: hamradiomenus (<< 1.1)
Replaces: hamradiomenus (<< 1.1)

Debian doesn't allow two packages in main to conflict, so Hamish uploaded:

hamradiomenus (1.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * The package extra-xdg-menus now includes hamradiomenu's functionality and
more, so make this a dummy package which depends on that package.

If Ubuntu has had neither package before why would we want hamradiomenus? It's a dummy package that we don't need as far as I can tell.

hamradiomenus is now essentially deprecated, but the old version IS in Ubuntu:

https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hamradiomenus

The original reason hamradiomenus is mentioned on this sync request (for extra-xdg-menus as a new package) is that hamradiomenus should be sync'd to the dummy version now.

Since hamradiomenus had been in Ubuntu until now, presumably we can't just remove it?

Hmm.. it seems there is a bug transitioning from hamradiomenus to extra-xdg-menus anyway, hamradiomenus installs a conffile in /etc/, where extra-xdg-menus installs a symlink,

The upgrade from one to the other isn't handling this - the new package
fails to unpack because of the conflicting files.

Probably best the two conflict for now I'd guess. I'll look into fixing the debian packages.

I'm unsubscribing ubuntu-universe-sponsors for now, as I don't see anything in need of sponsoring above (pending the results of Peter's investigation). More generally, I'd prefer the extra-xdg-menus source to generate the hamradiomenus binary transition package and drop the hamradiomenus source, rather than maintaining a source consisting of only a transition package for hardy (yes, this would be a local Ubuntu modification, but it could be dropped for hardy+1, assuming we remove and blacklist hamradiomenus).

Please resubscribe ubuntu-universe-sponsors if a solution is develop that needs sponsoring.

Hamish Moffatt fixed this in Debian. (Ok, hamradiomenus is still a separate source package at present, otherwise Hamish tells me we'd need to bump the extra-xdg-menus version beyond that of the present hamradiomenus release).

Please sync package extra-xdg-menus and hamradiomenus from debian unstable:

extra-xdg-menus (1.0-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Fix installation failure if upgrading from hamradiomenus package (closes:
    #466484) by changing conflicts/replaces

 -- Hamish Moffatt <email address hidden> Sun, 30 Mar 2008 16:15:16 +1100

hamradiomenus (1.2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Modify postrm not to purge the configuration file if it has been
replaced by a symlink by extra-xdg-menus.

 -- Hamish Moffatt <email address hidden> Sun, 30 Mar 2008 16:44:27 +1100

hamradiomenus (1.1) unstable; urgency=low
