Bug Description

With Hardy:
every 3rd (+/-) boot the keyboard is frozen. Mouse works.
The log shows this line is missing when it is frozen:
Feb 10 17:29:42 pkands-desktop kernel: [ 35.541618] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input1
THe does not appear anywhere is the log.
This pc is fine with 2.6.22 kernels. This was also happening with fedora 2.6.23 kernels some months ago.
This is a HP pavilion s7600y.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I had to be in a position to ssh in and have it be frozen at the same time.
The requested logs are attached.

Do you want logs when it is not frozen?

Also, I think the audio is affected when the keyboard freezes.
Have to check that.

Hi pkands,

Thanks for the log files. Yes, the dmesg output from when you don't notice a freeze wouldn't hurt either. Also, you may want to try testing the latest 2.6.24-8 kernel. Thanks!

pkands (pkands) wrote :

The 2.6.24-8 generic kernel doesn't fix it.
But, I installed the plain(isn't labeled as generic) version by mistake and ran that for several days without a problem until I noticed both CPUs weren't working.
I then installed the generic version of the kernel and the freeze immediately started happening again.
The zip contains 2.6.24-7 logs when frozen and not frozen. The missing line is marked with x- in the unfrozen-log.

Thanks pkands,

It would be good if you could test with the latest 2.6.24-12 kernel just to verify this is still an issue. I'll reassign to the kernel team. Thanks.

I have the same problem. Keyboard freezes almost randomly, but mostly after GDM initializes. I'm using kernel 2.6.24-12-generic and 2.6.24-12-rt.
This happens almost every time I boot - so that makes my Ubuntu unusable, since sometimes I have to reboot 10 times before my keyboard works.
Sometimes the mouse freezes, too - especially when using the generic kernel.

The bug must be related to the last upgrade (since everything worked fine in hardy-beta).

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Sorry to be asking you to test some more, there has been a lot of that, but it would be helpful for those of you who have this issue to re-test with the latest version for your release and report back. It appears you are both on Hardy, so if you could test with the kernel in Hardy -proposed and report back that would be helpful. Also if you are able to test the latest live-cd for jaunty. Those two data points may help us identify where the issue was fixed.

I've been running 32 bit Ubuntu (Dapper through Jaunty) on this box for a long time,
and never had this problem before. I'd be happy to provide any information you need.
