Bug Description

I'm running 20.04 and got the alert there was a FW update pending, so I ran it but it's failing:

➜ sudo fwupdmgr update --force -y
Upgrade available for Thunderbolt controller in Dell dock from 40.00 to 43.00
Downloading 43.00 for Thunderbolt controller in Dell dock...
Decompressing… [***************************************]
Authenticating… [***************************************]
Updating Thunderbolt controller in Dell dock… ]
Writing… [***************************************]
could not start thunderbolt device upgrade: could not write to 'nvm_authenticate': Input/output error

I have also logged this against upstream fwupd, but haven't got anywhere as yet (good for reference though): https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/issues/2689

Have also tried this on 5.8.0 kernel, but same issue.

In the issue reported upstream it was concluded not to be a fwupd problem, nor a WD19TB problem. The same issue occurs trying to read the NVM from the host. So kernel issue TBT FW issue, or HW issue.

Ubuntu Kernel Bot (ubuntu-kernel-bot) wrote : Missing required logs.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. While running an Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline or third-party kernel) please enter the following command in a terminal window:

apport-collect 1908322

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

Worth adding that this is the first time I've had issues with updating Dell firmware. It's updated plenty of times in the past, without fuss.
