Bug Description

Binary package hint: xmms

xmms is pending removal in Debian. It is obsolete, unmaintained upstream, has better forks, and depends on GTK1 - which is pending removal in Debian as well.

The Debian maintainer's argumentation for removal is outlined here: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2007/07/msg00026.html

the argument is : the other players don't have so many plugins as xmms (i tried rythmbox, songbird, and banshee) but they don't reach the xmms level of functionality , is like some winamp for windows , you don't like it's interface but people are used to it and is everywhere (at least in romania)

like an programmer somehow i understand is like the jump from php4 to php5 described here gophp5.org
xmms is an old program and the bugs are not solved or fixed but the users are still using on many places
so we have to push the new generation of players : xmms2 based , Audacious with an similar skin , amarok etc...

http://lwn.net/Articles/257629/

but as an user i still like the old player or sometimes the way of php4
so please kill it if is not used and if there are many requests then it will be re-added

I guess i will install an old xmms skin over the audacious and i don't have to retrain the friends

Now i have made audacious to look exactly like the xmms with Refugee skin so it can replace xmms easily on any desktop

and it has the voice removal plugin (needed for playing covers)

the cpu used is somewhere at 5% for audicious but is ok i guess

ps: the only thing i need now is an gnome applet for playing music
