i cannot reproduce this. We have chattet a bit on IRC and it looks like its related to your specific system install.

Attaching strace -f firefox
or trying to upgrade to latest firefox
as well as disabling all extensions might give us a better clue on whats going on.

i have a similar problem and created Bug #187666 a while ago, since then i'm still trying to understand what's going on
all i can say now is that is is not firefox only related, because i can make crash nearly any application.
all i need to do is to open the application e.g. firefox or thunderbird and goto -> Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks...
in the new window labeled "Bookmarks Manager" -> File -> Import...
new window labeled "Import Wizard" click on Next button
new window labeled "Import Bookmark File" -> click cancel to close this window
now we are back on window labeled "Bookmark Manager"
repeat same procedure -> File ->Import
firefox will hang now, and eventualy crash

After taking out all the extensions & upgrading 2.0.12 the downloads the uploads still have to be investigated.

The upload is also working, I just uploaded a 100 KIB file to rapidshare without any issues. For the time it seems to have been resolved the issue.
