laptop screen turns off when I connect an external monitor

Bug Description

When I connect the hdmi cable from my monitor the laptop screen starts to darken this only happens when I connect the external monitor.

when I switch to mirror the external monitor starts flickering and the laptop monitor turns off completely.

When I switch to join displays, the laptop monitor turns off completely and the external monitor stays on.

Maybe the system is remembering the external monitor as a configuration where the laptop screen was once turned off. So switching to that configuration involves turning off the laptop screen. To fix that try deleting all memory of the monitor configurations:

  rm ~/.config/monitors.xml
