Bug Description

Binary package hint: gedit

2.21.1-0ubuntu2

if I select a text, I should be able to paste it using the mouse wheel. This works only if the text remains selected, so I cannot click anywhere else in the document, otherwise the copy buffer is lost.

I can't reproduce this bug on hardy, can you try with latest updates, please?

it's simple to reproduce
1) open a text file
2) select some text
3) click somewhere in gedit (for instance in the following line)
4) click the middle mouse button
nothing happens

This is the correct behavior: gedit shouldn't copy the selected text in the clipboard because (if you don't use some special applications such as glipper) this will overwrite the previous copied data. This can be very unconfortable for most of the users. For example, if you copy an image from GIMP, delete it, and select some text in gedit (not perforce for mistake) you will lose the image.

For this reason I mark this bug Won't Fix, but please feel free to reopen the bug or ask questions about, I'd happy to try to solve your problem.

You should use the copy menu option or ctrl-C to copy, what you describe is the way xorg copy works

I didn't explain the problem well: I don't want to copy the selected text in the ctrl-v clipboard.
I want to copy it in the middle button buffer!

This is done in gnome-terminal, so it can be also done in gedit. In gnome terminal, when you select some text, and then click elsewhere the buffer is still full with the text you selected! In gedit, if you click (but not select!) other things the buffer is cleared
