For anyone else with this issue, I was able to work around it by switching from the VLC to the GStreamer backend for Phonon:

    sudo apt-get install phonon4qt5-backend-gstreamer phonon4qt5settings

Then running:

    /usr/bin/phononsettings

Finally go to the "Backend" tab, select "Phonon GStreamer" and the up arrow to move it to the top. Then OK to exit the application.
