Bug Description

Ubuntu Cinnamon 20.10 does not install nor update the Linux headers, that are required for the Virtualbox Guest Additions. The upgrade from Linux 5.8.0-18 to 5.8.0-19 went wrong after reboot, because the screen was using the default 800 x 600. It was not possible to update to my standard 1920 x 1080, because it was missing from the list of supported resolutions, so I compromised on 1680 x 1050.

I used Synaptic again to reinstall the Linux headers and after that the installation of Virtualbox Guest Additions went as as expected and everything was OK. Ubuntu itself does NOT have this problem, it is specific for Cinnamon.

Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix is not an official Ubuntu flavor, nor do they have a manifest file where one can see whether the headers are part of the install image or not. I suggest you contact them directly. https://ubuntucinnamon.org/contact-us/
(Also, if they have a central bugtracker, I can't find it.)

(Setting to Incomplete in case it turns out to be an issue with Ubuntu itself.)

Changed in virtualbox (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Sorry I didn't see this, we don't maintain VirtualBox but it's always worth seeing

Check this on any other distro with Cinnamon DE: Does this occur with them too? (Get an unstable ISO like Fedora 33 Beta)

But this is definitely something important.

It look like one problem has disappeared, I have a display resolution
at 1920 x 1080 now.

I don't remember what happened going from 5.8.0-19 to 5.8.0-20, but
synaptic still marks those headers as manually intalled.
- linux-headers-5.9.0-20-generic
- linux-image-generic
So I assumed that the (re-)installation of Virtualbox went wrong,
because those headers were missing and I installed those headers using
synaptic. I expect, that those headers are installed by default, when
installig or updating Linux.

I only have Linux Mint 20 VM and I have no problems with it. But that
one still runs Linux 5.4.
I did not have these problems with Ubuntu Cinnamon 20.04 VM running at
Linux 5.4.

I've done the upgrade to Linux 5.8.0-21 and had all the old buggy
sympthoms. That all had been caused by the failing of the Virtualbox
Guest Additions installation for Linux 5.8.0-21 during the Linux
upgrade from 20 to 21.
Everything was OK after:
- I installed "linux-headers-5.9.0-21-generic" using Synaptic and
- reinstalled the Virtualbox Guest Additions.
