Hi Orvar,

The problem seems to be due to a local configuration error where the parameter "mydomain" is not valid:

newaliases: warning: valid_hostname: numeric hostname: 04
newaliases: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter mydomain: bad parameter value: 04
dpkg: error processing package postfix (--configure):
 installed postfix package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 75

Since it's a local problem, I'll mark it as invalid. Thanks

Changed in postfix (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

Hi, thanx for your answer. However, I am a Linux newbie, and have not tinkered with my system. It is basically a fresh 20.04 and I have applied all updates. I have definitely not done anything with "mydomain". So why is that I get this error, do you know? How can I resolve this problem? Should I set the "mydomain" thing to something? Why is it that a fresh Ubuntu 20.04 with all updates triggers this error?

Right now, my Nvidia driver has reverted back to Noveau driver, because the latest update could not update the Nvidia driver - I suspect the update error is because of this "mydomain" problem? So now I am stuck at 800x600 resolution which is unusable. I can not work.

I remember earlier when I used 18.04 LTS, I also got problems like this. After a update the resolution was stuck to 640x480. I tried to fix it by installing Nvidia driver, but no luck. At the end I bricked my Ubuntu install, when I tried to download the Nvidia driver and install it manually. So I had to revert back to Unix. Now I am trying to transition to Ubuntu, but I get this problem. I am stuck at 800x600 with Noveau and cannot install Nivida driver to fix the resolution. I dont understand why the updates cause these problems? Should I set the "mydomain" to something? Do you have any clue where I can start to dig?

Ok, now Nvidia driver works, I have a working desktop. I just rebooted. I have no idea what is happening nor why. As a Unix (Solaris) user I am transitioning to Ubuntu, but I think that Ubuntu is a bit fragile.

But, is it a problem that myshostname and mydomain are not set? Should it be fixed?

Hello Orvar,

You can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem in the Community Support channels:

https://ubuntu.com/support/community-support

We use this bug tracker to track bugs in Ubuntu, rather than configuration problems. This helps us to focus on fixing bugs in Ubuntu.

If you believe you actually found a bug, then you may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem and explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem specific to your system.

Hello Paride,

This is very annoying. I cannot update Ubuntu. The updates all fail. I have not tinkered with Ubuntu, or changed anything. It is a stock Ubuntu. Now Retropie have stopped working as well, after the last update. Ubuntu is very fragile it seems? I install something, and it works fine. Then I do an update and hell breaks loose.

I do not understand where to even begin to look. The symptoms are that updates can not be installed. The GUI says something like "failed update" or something similar. So I tried to update again from command line to catch the output.
$ sudo apt update
works fine

But this upgrade command causes problems. How can I run some commands giving output, to give you information for debugging?

$ sudo apt upgrade
