Middleclick (click on middle button) causes odd behaviour

Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Middleclick in Firefox 3.0 is left at the default, which is to paste. This means that a middleclick not on a button or a link (i.e., on some blank area) will cause whatever is in the clipboard to be opened as if it were a link. If the contents of the clipboard are not a URL, then a popup appears with

"The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded"

which is very odd to someone not expecting it. If the clipboard happens to contain something similar to a URL, it will be opened in a new tab, which is also potentially very confusing.

To change this, the option "middlemouse.paste" should be False (that would be my recommendation).

Why not just enable autoscrolling by default?

I forgot about that option. I agree, enabling autscroll is a better idea.

Actually, on Firefox 2, the middle-click behaviour was more sensible - with middlemouse.paste set to 'true', middle-clicking in text boxes would paste text, but not give this annoying (and modal) message. Middle-click to paste is useful across X-based apps, so disabling it is unwise, but with Firefox moving away from modal boxes altogether, this "URL is not valid" box shouldn't appear at all.

please be sure to install ubufox. do you still see bogus behaviour with that?

If so, please rephrase what works and what doesn't with ubufox installed.

Thanks,

I tried this again now and it appears to work fine.

That is, I have middlemouse.paste at the default value of "yes", and it now only pastes inside text areas, as it should. I do have ubufox installed, perhaps that did the trick?

I also think autoscrolling should be enabled by default.
You can support this by voting in Ubuntu brainstorm for this idea: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5943/.

For me, setting middlemouse.contentLoadURL to false fixed the problem.

Alexander, it must be due to me having Ubufox disabled. This is due to custom icon issue that conflicts with TabMixPlus, among others. When that is fixed, this issue should go away for me. I was expecting to see the auto-scroll when it happened.
