Bug Description

1) lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release: 20.04
2) see attached apport report

3) When I try to connect to our companies Cisco Anyconnect VPN server I expect to get a dialog for authentication as I did on my Lubuntu 16.04 installation

4) Instead of a dialog I only get a notification "Connection lost, no longer connected to VPN"

I verified that the VPN connection setup is correct by using the command line interface:

nmcli -ask connection up "ConnectionName"

This will ask me on the terminal for my authentication details and when the connection is established the network manager applet will show "Connection established"

However, when I use nmcli without "-ask" it will fail as well, while the same command on my 16.04 installation will bring up the dialog.

The issue seems to specific to Lubuntu 20.04.
Double checked on fresh installs of Lubuntu 20.04 and Xbuntu 20.04 in virtualbox.
Lubuntu fails, Xubuntu works as expected.

Figured it out by myself that nm-tray is broken.
By disabling nm-tray in Autostart the system is now working as expected.

affects: network-manager-openconnect (Ubuntu) → nm-tray (Ubuntu)

nm-tray is light and based in Qt, which is great. Its VPN support, however, is lacking, as you have discovered.

Incidentially, the workaround is discussed in the Lubuntu manual:
https://manual.lubuntu.me/stable/G/AdvancedNetworking.html

Changed in nm-tray (Ubuntu):
status: New → Triaged
importance: Undecided → Medium
summary: - network manager applet for authentication is not working
+ nm-tray does not prompt for password with VPN connections
Changed in nm-tray:
status: Unknown → New
