I booted a Lubuntu 20.04 install on my hp.8200 and searched ubuntu.com for a PDF and grabbed http://people.ubuntu.com/~lyz/xubuntu/xubuntu-feltonlug.pdf viewing it in qpdfview.

I firstly made a bookmark on page 12 (Quality Assurance), it appears in bookmarks list of available bookmarks. I exited program, re-entered and no bookmarks exist. I repeated this three times with different pages & each time same result.

I then repeated this on my primary (d960/groovy) box and had the same occur

On starting the program, it appears
~/.local/share/qpdfview/qpdfview/database
is accessed as the file date/time stamp reflects this.

I then let it sit idle (~two mins, or clock minute has incremented twice) before I start creating bookmarks, the timestamp doesn't alter reflecting on program start

guiverc@d960-ubu2:/de2900/lubuntu_64$ file ~/.local/share/qpdfview/qpdfview/database
/home/guiverc/.local/share/qpdfview/qpdfview/database: SQLite 3.x database, last written using SQLite version 3031001

(this is the file I'd expect to change with creation of bookmarks, however it appears empty using sqlitebrowser to view detail within it - no records. stat & `ls` were used to watch for changes on adding bookmarks..)

(in my prior comment all testing was performed on hp 8200/focal, the paste from my d960 was only because that's where I was logged into lp; sqlite detail looked ~equiv).

same issue occurs on eoan; used ubuntu.packaging.guide pdf on d780 with identical results.

I noticed that in Edit > Settings > (Behaviour) Restore Bookmarks may fix this issue.

Chris Guiver, can you confirm this?

I booted d755-5 (focal/20.04) and had a play.
On that box the Settings->Behaviour->Restore.Bookmarks appeared to make no difference. I tried it many times, reduced the "Save database interval" to 0, then 1 and it wasn't working for a "ubuntu beginner's guide (makeuseof)" pdf. (I wasn't really waiting, expecting settings to not need me to wait)

On my main d960 (groovy/20.10) it worked as you suggested @thedoctar, and I didn't wait for anything.

I returned to d755-5 & re-opened the pdf, ensured settings (Restore.Bookmarks on, Save.Database.interval=1min; (Restore.per-file-settings was now on as I'd played with many settings earlier), made a new bookmark (again), and this time went for a walk.. On return I exited program, then on entry of program - this time I had saved pages. I exited program, and re-started it, and could select from saved contents a page & it'd open doc & jump to that page :)

The d755-5 is an old re-used /home partition (last formatted on opensuse 11 I think) with lots of gnome2/KDE4/.. config setup, which possibly is having influence?? I'll aim to re-test on a cleaner box/install when I can.

Either way - we have likely have
 - a work-around for support purposes,
 - maybe even a need to document in Lubuntu manual?

I think this should be documented. I've contacted the developer to suggest even removing the option and saving bookmarks as a default. Can you document this?
