Fails to properly render PDF (evince, pdfpc, etc have no trouble)

Bug Description

pympress does not render text on this PDF slide:

The lower left window is evince, showing how it should look. Another presentation software (pdf-presenter-console, also renders it correctly.

Here's the PDF file that is being displayed:

The PDF was created with pdflatex inserting a pdf created by matplotlib.
