Blank Screen initiates then fails

Bug Description

Blank Screen initiates after timeout (usually 5 minutes but set to 1 minute to replicate this bug), screen goes blank on both laptop and external Dell, but immediately comes back on. Whilst it is blanking, any running applications show their windows (which is not usual) but it appears gnome-shell and the window manager are not running (no dash and no window decorations).

Disconnecting external monitor exhibits the same Blank Screen failure on the laptop screen.

I have turned Automatic Screen Lock off for now to remove that as a cause.

I have also had intermittent failure of gnome-shell.

Thanks for the bug report. This sounds like gnome-shell has crashed and is being restarted:

When gnome-shell crashes the apps are still running on the bare Xorg server so it looks different.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
    ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921, reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security risk for yourself.

Thanks. Yes - I can see now that it is a gnome-shell segfault. Turning off the gnome-shell extension dash-to-panel (https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1160/dash-to-panel/) resolves the issue. I notice on the extension's page someone has also reported the problem there. Workaround for now is to disable the dash-to-panel extension until it is updated.

Since you mention dash-to-panel and crashing when the screen locks, I think this is probably bug 1877774. So let's assume that until proven otherwise.
