I've also experienced this. In fact, it's a few different apps that all crash with the same error (compiz is doing the same for me, but it may be when it calls emerald that it happens).

Changed in pidgin:

I presume this is what has been reported already in some private bugs, and was reported upstream at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=513495. Indeed the "unset G_DEBUG" workaround fixed the problem for me.

After i have done unset G_DEBUG pidgin works again, but only if it is run from terminal, doing [alt]+F2 and entering pidgin it still crashes.

I was also encountering the same error. In attempting to work around the issue, I tried using Finch which worked until an MSN account was enabled, which promptly crashed Finch. Starting Pidgin with --nologin option allowed Pidgin to work normally, and--as long as no MSN accounts were enabled--allows for a restart without the --nologin option. If this method works for this problem, this bug might be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/187604
