The error in your log is:

You have installed the 'grub' package, which is grub1, instead of the grub-pc package, which is grub2, and have not configured it. This is an error. You should remove the grub1 package from your system with 'apt-get remove --purge grub'.

Changed in grub (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

Hi, You are reporting this bug report from xenial. Have you only recently encountered this problem? Have you tried upgrading to bionic or focal? And the package version of your kernel seems out of date. I see you have Installed on 2019-05-12 (361 days ago), but even then bionic was the most current release for over a year already.

Have you tried upgrading to grub2, instead of the legacy grub1?
