I got exactly the same problem. I've decided to install Ubuntu Studio on my machine where I had before KUbuntu 10.10 (which was working fine).

So, installation went well, however, when doing the first boot nothing happened and I got tty login prompt. I've decided to upgrade machine hoping it will fix the issue, so I did:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

It took a while to upgrade, and it installed a newer kernel. I did reboot and the same problem.

It is worth to mention that I have Radeon videoadapter, and make flgrx is not working properly? However, it could be also GNOME specific bug, as in Ubuntu with KDE I had no failures.

Feel free to ask me to run some commands for you which will be helpful. I can output them here.

This seems to be an old problem that has likely fixed itself with newer kernels.
