Bug Description

Using the Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa Beta version.

The ibus-unikey package is at version 0.6.1-1.1build1

What should happen: I should be able to press the Meta key regardless of input sources chosen.

What happened: When Vietnamese (Unikey) is chosen as the input source, the Meta key cannot be pressed.

With "Meta" key, do you possibly mean the <AltGr> / <Right Alt> key?

I see in bug #1872319 that you use the "English (Colemak)" layout (where <Righ Alt> is used by default to access 3:rd and 4:th level symbols), but the underlying layout used by ibus-unikey is "English (US)" (which does not make use of <Right Alt>).

Changed in ibus-unikey (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

About the 'Meta' key, I'm mentioning the Windows/Super key, the button you use to open up GNOME Activities. The button is blocked whenever I switch to Unikey.

Thanks for looking into this as imo this is an important usability issue.

Thanks for clarifying. But that seems not to be an ibus-unikey issue.

If you change it so "Vietnamese (Unikey)" is the first source in the list of input sources (see attached screenshot), <Super> works as expected for Unikey. But then it doesn't work for "English (Colemak)"...

So I think this is some kind of gnome-shell issue; changing the affected package accordingly and changing the bug summary as well. Since you still have the option to click on "Activities", I think the importance of this bug is low.

affects: ibus-unikey (Ubuntu) → gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
Changed in gnome-shell (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: Incomplete → Confirmed
summary: - Cannot press Meta key when being used as input source
+ <Super> key opens Activities overview only when the XKB layout used by
+ the first source in the list of input sources is active
