Bug Description

On creating a new document in Inkscape 0.46-pre0 Preview Release, the new document opens with a zoom of 25600% which obviously shouldn't be. Although not a mojor problem, it is rather annoying. Please fix it so on creation of a new document, the zoom is set in relation to the window size, i.e. fit page to screen.

I can't reproduce this on recent SVN under Linux (Fedora Core 6). What OS are you running? Does this happen when opening inkscape with no arguments, or when choosing File->New->Default?

Can you try moving or renaming your preferences.xml file temporarily? If that fixes it, could you attach the preferences file to this bug report?

zoom is saved in the template, you may have some weird old template default.svg lingering about, search for it and delete, then reinstall

I can't confirm on WinXP todays build, but I remember having the same issue before - bug 166184

It popped up for me again, I think it has something to do with changing default.svg, I guess it doesn't save zoom info very well.

I fixed it by deleting preferences.xml

It appeared again when changing Inkscape preferences > Windows > Saving window geometry.

It only occurs if the middle option is selected (Remember and use last window's geometry). This time a new doc gets opened with 18361% zoom, and the area is off page.

I still cannot reproduce this. Can you please give the detailed steps,
starting from a new fresh inkscape install with default
preferences.xml and default template.

Could it have to do with the "Zoom when window is resized" option? (Inkscape Preferences, "Windows" tab, second checkbox from the bottom). This behaviour just hit me when I checked it and opened a new document.

I made a clean unpack of todays build (26th March) - deleted Inkscape directories (install and preferences).

The combination that causes weird zoom is

Inkscape Preferences > Windows > Remember and use last window's geometry
Inkscape Preferences > Windows > Zoom when window is resized

I usually get 18361% zoom on every new document and 25600% on most of the existing documents (but other numbers also appear, depends on the document).
Often when the zoom number in the existing document is so big the panning is extreme - vertical scrollbar is at its bottom-most position, and horizontal on its right-most.

I cannot reproduce either. This was with a now unsupported pre-release version of Inkscape. The official 0.46 release is available. Given that as well as the inability for for bbyak and myself to reproduce this issue, this bug will be closed. If you continue to have the same problem with the newer version, please feel free to reopen the bug report and attach your preferences file and default.svg.

Marking as Incomplete as the problem has appeared in the official 0.46 version (duplicate bug).

The question is if a tainted default.svg or preferences.xml from the pre-release stage left something behind that could cause it on that machine. So it may not be caused by the official release, but potentially by a leftover from a previous install.

I installed only two official releases in my machine (0.45.1-1.win32 and 0.46.win32) and removed all preference files (actually all the directory tree) before installing the 0.46. Still the problem comes out every time I set-unset-set the "Remember and use last window's geometry" option.
Also, I installed and use the Italian version and the problem is the same if I switch to the English version (I do this to read option's names and report them in English).

not sure if this is relevant, but the preferences.xml file is stored in the directory C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Inkscape\, which is normally a hidden directory.

so even if you delete the entire Inkscape installation directory, the preferences file will not be deleted. If you delete it yourself or rename it, then a new default file will be created for you next time.

You're right, I didn't delete the preferences.xml file.

Anyway, trying some other combinations I found that the problem is present when you enable both "Remember and use last window's geometry" and "Zoom when window is resized" options.

So:
 - delete preferences.xml (or rename);
 - open Inkscape;
 - set both options;
 - close Inkscape;
 - reopen Inkscape and voila: 25600% zoom!

As above users (and duplicate bug report #283786) I have the same problem.

OS: Windows XP SP3
Inkscape 0.46 official release for win32 - just installed clean a week ago - never used before

The only preference setting I changed after install was "Remember and use last window's geometry" and "Zoom when window is resized". Also I set the windows option in the Inkscape shortcut to "Maximize window on start program". And I switched from Dutch language to English; didn't like the dutch translation to much. But the problem was regardless of language.

Wether I open a drawing regardless of extension (happened to be pdf) or start a new drawing, the zoom is set to 25600% or some other large number with the drawing itself way of the center; that is, if you can still see something at that zoom setting ;-)

I suspect an error in the zoom setting and/or zoom proces. It should zoom to "fit in window". Maybe the zoom code interprets the paper size wrong.

Confirmed with the official 0.46 and Windows XP sp3.
Can be reproduced with the steps given by LucaDC in https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/187131/comments/14

But NOT reproduced with build 20932.
I changed the status to confirmed, but we may consider closing it (Fi x released?).
