The Ubuntu Error Tracker has been receiving reports about a problem regarding gdm3. The stacktrace has

Looks like it might be a fprintd issue

The journal logs on the errors report have

 fprintd[11083]: Device reported an error during identify: The driver encountered a protocol error with the device.
