Bug Description
Fake thumbnails should get created first for all photos, then replaced with thumbnails. When there are many photos (e.g. 1000), there is no placeholder for the photo until the thumbnail is created. Instead, there should be a placeholder with a simple graphic for every photo so that the user can scroll through the list and select a photo. Thumbnails then replace the place holder when time allows. Currently the thumbnails start showing up and continue until finished and the user has no idea how many photos are in the list.

Using default thumbnails also has it's down side in that it takes more CPU cycles away while the thumbnailer thread is attempting to create thumbnails.
We will have to do some prototyping to determine what the best approach is, but the end result needs to be a smooth user experience.
NOTE: One small twist on this approach would be to fill in the view with a very simple thumbnail, and then have the thumbnailer thread only work on thumbnails that are currently in view.
