Bug Description

Please sync fetchmail 6.4.2-2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Merge with Debian unstable. Remaining changes:
    - d/tests: Add basic dep8 test cases. This adds a trivial test to
verify installation of the main bits, and that the service is up
and running. Partially addresses LP #1677818 "Missing dep8
tests", however a true fix will also test email fetching from a
      (local) mail service.
The dep8 tests were pulled into Debian.

Changelog entries since current focal version 6.4.1-1ubuntu1:

fetchmail (6.4.2-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Allow stderr on service testing.

fetchmail (6.4.2-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Sync with Ubuntu.

Hi Logan,

I haven't check in detail yet but this looks good in principle, with just one question: what are the changes between upstream 6.4.1 and 6.4.2 and are they all suitable for Ubuntu's current feature freeze?

Hey Robie. The changes under "Breaking Changes" might be considered features as part of the freeze. I'm not sure if it's worth requesting an exception accordingly, although the Python 3 support might be good to have as part of the LTS. Thoughts?

Thanks Matthias, the summary is very helpful.

"Breaking Changes" refers only to fetchmailconf. As far as I can tell, this is no longer packaged, and wasn't in 6.4.1-1ubuntu1 either. Is this correct? It is still listed as a Suggests, but seems to have disappeared in 6.4 packaging compared to Bionic where it was present, for example. Or is it somehow integrated into the main binary now? If fetchmailconf isn't present in Focal, I think they aren't Breaking Changes from Ubuntu's perspective? But it might be a separate bug that needs resolving that fetchmailconf has vanished?

Also the breaking changes are lessened support for old python2, increased support for python3, and that's entirely conducive to 20.20's python objectives, even if the item in question is not actually shipping for us.

There appears to be one technical fix to STARTTLS support, the rest of the bug fixes are to documentation. No new features are added.

The inclusion of our dep8 test upstream is great, and indeed does allow this to become a sync.

All in all, looks good to me, +1 to sync, and I will do so directly. Thanks for the report.
