I suspect this is a problem related more to the particular graphics chip, which I've never had. I've long used Openbox (on Lubuntu, mind you, which could very well be the difference) with no problems, though. I would suggest doing a couple things:

 1. Ensure that you can reproduce this in a freshly installed system, or perhaps even just the live media. If you can't, then it's something specific about your setup.
 2. Check to see if you can reproduce it in a virtual machine. If you can't, then it must be specific to your card.
 3. Check to see if other flavors of Ubuntu are affected by this. If they are not, it must be something specific about the default Ubuntu set up. At the very least, Lubuntu should Just Work™ unless it's related to your card.

Finally a word of warning: upstream Openbox developers long pronounced it a finished project so the likelihood of getting any bugs fixed, at least by upstream, is quite small.

I booted a Lubuntu 20.04 system on dell [optiplex] 780 (c2q-q9400, 8gb, amd/ati cedar radeon hd 5000/6000/7350/8350), a ~recent QA-install which has had little modifications as it's not used.

I logged in via `openbox` and could not replicate this issue on the Lubuntu install either. I'll continue testing.. FYI: I've seen the issue you describe too, but not recently.

A 18.04.4 (i386) QA-install of Kubuntu was recently done to this box. I logged in at terminal, `sudo apt install lubuntu-desktop`, switched to GUI and logged in with `openbox` and COULD replicate this issue. reboot & issue was again reproducible when logged in with `openbox`.

I booted the Lubuntu 18.04.4 LTS media and tried using `openbox` at the login screen, but this time could NOT re-create the issue.

(why bionic on this box; I was looking at a `gnome-mpv` issue on i386 lubuntu so this box was handy; I'd forgotten I installed xubuntu over lubuntu, then kubuntu over xubuntu..)

I also booted Lubuntu 18.04.4 installs on
- hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e8300, 8gb, amd/ati radeon rv610/radeon hd2400 pro/xt)

logging in using `openbox` and could NOT replicate the issue

This bug seems to be confirmed, yes, but the conditions and steps to reproduce seem to be missing, so please keep the status incomplete until we get that figured out.

As requested by @wxl

To re-produce I only had to

1. login using openbox
2. right click and open terminal
3. drag terminal around screen using mouse; everywhere it left trails/images

I tried a number of boxes (could not replicate), the box I could replicate it on was

18.04.4 LTS qa-install (from last week); kubuntu with lubuntu-desktop added

Chris: It seems the key to making that system not work, though, was Kubuntu being installed first, though, right? You tried with Lubuntu and no problems? If that is true, can you try the Kubuntu+lubuntu-desktop thing on the other machines you have available? If we can reproduce on more than one (especially if there's not a common card or driver) then we can limit the bug down to something about Kubuntu (or the combination of Kubuntu+openbox).

It might also be good to see what other flavors+lubuntu-desktop result in. I presume the OP is on Ubuntu proper?

Oh, and in all cases we're logging in with the Openbox session, right? What if we instead simply changed the value of x-window-manager and logged into the normal session?

Walter, I used the i386 box for testing Lubuntu until all (lubu) testing was done, then used it for some i386 Xubuntu .. then some i386 Kubuntu. When I booted it for 'openbox' testing I'd forgotten Lubuntu wasn't there anymore (and installing lubuntu-desktop was quicker than a re-install)

===> IMPORTANT BIT
On dx6120mt I booted the 18.04.4 live media (last RC), logged out of LXDE/Lubuntu, then into Openbox... I could NOT re-create issue here !!

A clean install of Lubuntu 18.04.4 LTS was just done on dx6120, and as Walter expected; logging into 'Openbox' I could NOT re-create the issue; same box that has kubuntu+lubuntu on.

(Kubuntu+Lubuntu is in different partition.. I'll continue playing/exploring (but not today))
=== END important bit

I tested on installed Lubuntu 18.04 on
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
no re-creation of this issue.
I couldn't re-create this on
- hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)
- hp 8200 elite sff (i5-2400, 8gb, nvidia quadro 600)
using 20.04 'live' (today's daily)
