Bug Description

Binary package hint: gedit-plugins

When I try to open a quite large text file, gedit closes itself right after launching. This is the error thrown if I lauch the application from a terminal:

gedit: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0.

After playing with the options, I found that the problem was caused by the "Draw spaces" plugin.

John.

Thank you for your bug report. What version of Ubuntu are you using?

I replied a few days ago through my e-mail client, but it seems like it didn't go through this time. So:

    Ubuntu: 7.10
   kernel: linux-rt 2.6.22-14.47
   gedit: 2.20.3-0ubuntu1
   gedit-plugins: 2.20.0-0ubuntu1

I hope that helps.

John.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release?

I don't understand what you mean by "latest Ubuntu release". Isn't 7.10 the latest release? Trying the alpha of Hardy Heron is not an option I would want to try right now (I'll wait for the beta at least).

The offending file was slatec (http://people.scs.fsu.edu/~burkardt/f_src/slatec/slatec.f90), which has around 300 thousand lines. I just tried opening the file, with the draw-spaces plugin active and in disabled highlight mode, and it seems to work just fine (it also works with enabled highlight mode, but it's too slow to be practical).

Thanks.

John.

I forgot to mention that the draw-spaces plugin also causes gedit to close unexpectedly when the file encoding is not UTF-8, but it's not a constant ---i.e., it happens with some TeX files that were created under Windows and require Latin-1 encoding.

Thanks again.

I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron beta a couple of days ago. The draw-spaces plugin is still unstable: opening the slatec file with the plugin enabled, causes gedit to freeze, and I eventually have to kill the application (since there is no response). I still haven't checked the issue with the Latin-1 encoding.

Also, funily, the plugin remains enabled after if I disable it through the preferences (and is finally disabled after I open/close gedit a couple of times).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
