Can't delete instance: 6456e8ae-ee24-4d7d-a5c0-40add476f740 in ERROR state using openstack or nova clients

Essentially, the openstack databases have got themselves into a state where the instance shows up as an error, but can't be found for the delete to work. I suspect manual alteration of the database is required to remove the instance metadata.

I found this script: https://gist.github.com/frgaudet/4b0d6fedc6de846ed7d2 which will almost certainly do the job; however, we may have other preferred methods?
