Bug Description

The new maintainer of the Debian smartmontools package re-added update-smart-drivedb in smartmontools 7.0-1.

See this commit for the related comment in README.Debian:
https://salsa.debian.org/debian/smartmontools/commit/c894f39ddcbc48f478bad9ddf7702944eadbba8f

Please consider to re-add the script also in the Ubuntu package. In the past, the Ubuntu package usually followed Debian (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1574894).

Note that since smartmontools 6.6 the script verifies the download with gpg.

PS: We released smartmontools-7.1 at 2019-12-30.

We have recently merged 7.0-2 and there wasn't too much Delta remaining.
In fact it came down to just a patch to let it run on diskless systems.

Debian chose a different way to achieve the same in bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=862908
The solution is https://salsa.debian.org/debian/smartmontools/blob/master/debian/patches/default_never-quit.patch

That should work for us just as much and I think we can make it a sync again which will also bring in the update-smart-drivedb that you are looking for.

Let me get a second opinion on that before I sync it.

I tested the Debian's patch to start the daemon even in diskless systems locally and it worked fine. I agree that smartmontools should become a sync from Debian from now on.

I triggered the sync, it is in proposed and built fine.
Lets wait if tests complete as well - with i386 removal and python3 switch there is enough in flight to have a bumpy road.
