Bug Description
I'm running Ubuntu Hardy Alpha 3 with all updates to date (2008-01-23) on a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Intel X3100 graphics.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Enable custom desktop effects for your default user by System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects - Custom. For the purposes of clarity I will call this default user "andrew".
2. Create a new user with System - Administration - Users and Groups. For the purposes of clarity, I will call this new user "melissa".
3. Log out of the default account "andrew".
4. Log in to the new account "melissa".
5. Enable custom desktop effects for "melissa" by System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects - Custom.
6. Remain logged in as "melissa" and use the User Switcher applet to also switch to "andrew".
7. RESULT: "andrew" has no Compiz effects (desktop falls back to what I presume is Metacity).
8. Log out of both accounts.
9. Log in to "andrew".
10. RESULT: "andrew" has Compiz effects again.
11. Remain logged in as "andrew" and use the User Switcher applet to also switch to "melissa".
12. RESULT: "melissa" now has no Compiz effects.
13. Log out of both accounts.
14. Log in to "melissa".
15. RESULT: "melissa" has Compiz effects again.
This is at best counter-intuitive and at worst a bug.
If it is impossible to have two Compiz users logged in at once, it should at least warn me so, and ideally give me the option of turning User Switching entirely off in the applet, screen lock AND Quit button (I can manually remove the switcher applet and - using gconf - remove the Switch User button from the screen lock, but I have been unable to remove the Switch User button from the Quit applet).
Ideally I should be able to have two (or more) logged in users all with Compiz and be able to switch between them using the user switcher without losing any effects.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https:/ /wiki.ubuntu. com/Bugs/ FindRightPackag e . I have classified this bug as a bug in compiz.
