Bug Description

After upgrading to 19.10 and rebooting. My machine goes into a frozen black screen. The default kernel after the update (5.3.0-23-generic) does not succeed in booting. If I select the older kernel, 5.0.0-36-generic, grub does go through and succeeds booting up.

System is a Dell XPS 15 9550 with Ubuntu Dual Boot. GRUB version 2.04-1ubuntu12. The Windows partition does work properly, and I am able to boot into it. Please advice on how to proceed with a fix, or if an update pushed to grub will fix this issue.

Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1853075

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Note: If you can't boot the latest kernel, please NOTE it & run `apport-collect 1853075` using an older kernel (the detail won't be as pertinent, but it'll still have detail).

This bug report can be converted to a question (which is aimed at support, bug reports are aimed and finding problems and fixing so subsequent users won't stumble with the same issue). You can also find help with your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

Should I build this from source? Or is there a .deb package that I can install with dpkg?

Would it be possible for you to do a reverse kernel bisection?

First, find the first -rc kernel works and the last -rc kernel doesn’t work from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Then,
$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect new $(the working version you found)
$ git bisect old $(the non-working version found)
$ make localmodconfig
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Install the newly built kernel, then reboot with it.
If it doesn’t work,
$ git bisect old
Otherwise,
$ git bisect new
Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the commit fixes the issue.

Then we can backport the bisected fix to stock Ubuntu kernel.

Hey, I was able to find that the bug was fixed in v5.4-rc1. I haven't been able to find the commit that fixes the issue though. Trying to run:
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Gives me the error: make: *** No rule to make target 'nproc'. Stop.

Hi, so I had this same exact issue. using 5.4 allowed me to get into Ubuntu, but now my Wifi driver is broken. Do you guys happen to known if the Netgear A6210 has a driver that will work with this Kernel?

nproc is in coreutil so I am not sure why it happened.

Is it possible to fix this issue by downgrade kernel version to 5.0.0 ?
