Binary package hint: openoffice.org2

i spelled a word "story" wrong on purpose "storry" and spell checker did not find any mistakes

I am able to reproduce this. When autospell check is ON, it is not able to detect the spellos. Even when I manually run the spell, it doesn't detect the spellos. I wonder if there is any extra options to be enabled to make the spell check work. Shouldn't it work by default, if so?

This is still broken in Hardy Heron, Ubuntu 8.04.

You need to install a spellchecker for your language.
