Removed the Security tag, since this is not a security bug.
Maybe you could try looking for people with similar problems using the same CD/DVD recorder as you.

Same problem here, it occured right after I exchanged my former drives to LG hardware (I have the GDR-H30N DVD-ROM and the GSA-H62N DVDRAM-Burner now). Since I didn't touch other hardware or software this must obviously be a problem with LG optical drives and (K)Ubuntu Gutsy.
I could see the system freezes with massive CPU load with reaction times up to a minute for a mouse move or click.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I've a problem like that, but a little bit different.

Since I've upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 I can not burn CD's however I can burn them in 8.04 and in XP.

I have this problem since Gutsy and it still happens in an up-to-date Intrepid :(
This is a different LG drive (GSA-4167B). When the system hangs, pressing Alt+SysRq+1 or Alt+SysRq+t (as described in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash ) has no effect.

Please ask for any information needed to hunt this bug, I would be more than happy to provide them. Starting Brasero and inserting my non-empty backup DVD-RW to write (or inserting the disc and then starting Brasero) results in a completely frozen machine. I was able to burn in Ubuntu 6.06, 6.10 and 7.04. This is a very sad regression :(

It could be also important: The drive is an ATAPI-one (no SATA, HDD is on the second ATA controller).

Probably some good news. We had a similar subject here in Germany on LG GDR-H30N, DVD-ROM. These Drives emulate SCSI

Have a look at this:

http://sidux.com/Article470.html
Sidux- changes ...After fixing the problem with multiple optical disc drives... (this is the 1st sentence there. If you'd like to check it out with the "Live CD" I'll be than happy to hear it works. This will do no harm to yr system.

This Distro uses Kernel "Linux sidux 2.6.27-10" and seems to resolve the subject. So it might be a Kernel associated prob.

I think the bug #159698 has the same reason, something is wrong with the dvd-reader LG GDR-H30N, it has also some issues with other operatingsystems, slow speed e.g.

Using this drive freezes the complete system, espacially with gparted.

Unfortunately, I can't eject the live cd and try to burn (I think all "live cds" work that way). Anyway, will those changes you refer to go upstream? Will they be applied to Ubuntu kernel?

Marked #247092 as a duplicate. Seems Ubuntu can't handle LG drives properly - this could be the trigger.

Any dev with a LG burner...?
