"change type" sometimes flips direction of label

In eeschema if I click right on a local label, select 'Change Type' and 'Change to Hierarchical Label', the result is flipped left to right or right to left. Same with changing to a Global Label or back from either. Changing from local label to text or back does not flip the direction nor between global label and hierarchical label.

I'm using KiCad 5.1.4 on Debian Linux, full version information is below.
