Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Upon running update-manager in Ubuntu 8.04 alpha; The app asks to perform a partial upgrade (the upgrade from gutsy appeared to complete correctly).
Upon clicking it, it begins prefetch and then the following error is displayed:

"Could not complete the upgrade:

An unresolvable problem occured when calculating the upgrade.
Please report this bug against the 'upgrade-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report."

Included in the report are the contents of aforementioned directory. I am not sure whether this is due to the fact I upgraded to Hardy Heron from Gutsy.

I read on some forums that more people experience this bug.

I was able to fix this by doing exactly what this plun's post says to do after installing hardy alpha

Not being able to upgrade everything caused ubuntu to break a lot of things, and would require a format.

From what it says in that post, is it possible that the error is given on my version due to the fact I have compiz compiled from git, which would interfere with the removal of said packages as they are not maintained by synaptic anymore?

I 'm using Xubuntu without Compiz and I'm having the same problem. But it could be another package on my computer that causes it...

I followed the instructions found at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4173898&postcount=3 and everything seems to have been resolved. I am not sure about the permanence of this solution, however.

I don't think your problem is cause by your compiz version. I receive the same error on a new and partially updated installation of Hardy Alpha 3.

I had the same problem on a fresh 8.04 alpha 3: update-manager wanted to run a "partial upgrade", but failed.
Running apt-get dist-upgrade from commandline solved the problems. Now the system is up to date.

Thanks for your bugreport.

If update-manager in hardy (or any pre-release version of ubuntu) can not calculate the upgrade, that is not a bug per-se. It mostly means that the archive is in a state of flux and a upgrade can not be calculated without removing ubuntu-desktop (or a similar imortant package). I fixed the error message in update-managers bzr to make this more clear.

During my update 2008-03-11 hardy update manager requested to update some files and delete obsolete files. It then deleted my standard game files then when running update manager again it went through a partial upgrade and would not allow a full upgrade. I still can not reload games or receive a full upgrade. I see packages listed but with the partial upgrade request on screen, It won't allow me to highlight the visible upgrades and upgrade the computer. I will now try the "apt-get dist-upgrade" from the command line.

It will not let me perform the apt-get function. This is the message "scott@scott-ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo: unable to resolve host scott-ubuntu. All of these problems after usins upgrade manager. I was hoping not to require a fresh install.

I received the same error message on May 31 on an upgrade to Hardy (from Gutsy) performed on May 18. I hope the attached file is the correct one. Thanks for the help.

Following Thomas Poulsen's advice, I ran sudo apt-get dist-upgrade from the command line. Everything seems to've gone swimmingly so far. Thanks again, all.

@M. Nease: The bug you see is a duplicate of bug #236583 - this is caused by a update of openoffice.org in hardy-proposed that is not complete yet.

OK Michael, thanks--I haven't had a problem since running apt-get dist-upgrade from the command line.
