This bug appears to be fixed in the Debian package in version 1.4.1-2.1, so I've synced it I wasn't able to reproduce the build failure in my tests, though, even before the sync; it seems strange to me that the described bug would be non-deterministic, but one way or another this bug appears to be fixed now.
